THE THEME OF THE BIBLE

The best way to extract the plan and counsel of God from the Bible is to first of all understand the theme of the Bible. The theme of the Bible is not about Israel and a list of moral codes. It is about Jesus. Everything is designed to point us to Jesus. Any other drive and interpretation without that in mind would lead to error and a misconception of God. 

The Old Testament was intended to point humankind to God, specifically the person of Jesus. The apostles understood this better as time went by. When we read the letters of the New Testament, we observe the writers referring to the Old Testament as foreshadowing Christ.

Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ (Colossians 2:16-17).

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up (John 3:14).

They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain” (Hebrews 8:5).

It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God’s presence (Hebrews 9:23-24).

In Luke 24 Jesus appeared to 2 disciples on the road to Emmaus and taught a lesson for all of us to review.  

27 Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things written about himself in all the scriptures. 

He appeared to his disciples in the evening to continue from where he stopped. 

 44 Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled.”

We are to inteprete life through the lens of Jesus and his finished work and not Israel and the bad news around us. The Bible closes with the Revelation of Jesus Christ. John a particular encounter that is worth seeing again and again.

In the Old Testament, the nation of Israel is called God’s son; then in the New Testament, Jesus is called God’s Son. Everything done in the Old Testament was merely the shadow of Jesus.

“Israel is my firstborn “This [Jesus] is my Son,
son” whom I love”

Israel was considered the seed of Abraham “But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you descendants of Abraham my friend” (Isa. 41:8). In the New Testament, the Seed of Abraham is Jesus:


The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. Scripture does not say “and to seeds,” meaning many people, but “and to your seed,” meaning one person, who is Christ”(Galatians 3:16).

“So I threw myself down at his feet to worship him, but he said, “Do not do this! I am only a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony about Jesus. Worship God, for the testimony about Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” – Revelation 19:10

The way to judge the situation in our world, Israel, the church, natural disaters and your own issues is through the revelation of Jesus Christ. That is how to always arrive in TRUTH.
