THE BELIEVER IS CONSTANTLY CLENSED BY THE BLOOD
“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” (1 John 1:7)
In the Old Testament we find the significance of blood in the sacrificial system. The Levites had to shed blood on a daily basis because of sins. The high priest shed one once in a year on behalf of the nation of Israel.
“He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull’s blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it.” (Leviticus 16:6)
The continuous shedding of blood was not an indication of a system of worship and atonement that God approves. Rather it was an indication that there was an insufficiency and incompletion in that Old covenant system. God was already telling them that it was a temporal template. Why?
But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. 4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. (Hebrews 10:3,4)
Since sins could not be taken away it was possible for the accuser to remind them of their failures and imperfection. He would always whisper to their ears that they were good enough and that God’s judgment would fall on them.
Till this day that is still the devil’s strategy. He whispers in people’s head telling them that, “You cannot go into God’s presence because you have not been reading your Bible, that they are good enough and that they are still owing God a pledge”
He keeps trying to bring up issues in your life to justify the fact that God will find your worship useless because of your sins. He simply tries to either make you feel disqualified or depressed to reach out to God. Sometimes he gets help from ministers who tell you straight in the face that your sins will find you out and that God has not forgotten or that you cannot hear your prayers. But is that the gospel?
If sin is still an issue in the life of the believer it is not because he enjoys sin but because he has not understood the redemption that he through the blood.
The truth is that nobody’s perfect. People will still struggle in one or two areas until they grow out of their negative lifestyle. But if the believer is only as saved as his most recent “unsinned” status then we are still in the Old covenant and the blood of Jesus counts for nothing.
In the above verse we find that in the original Greek text, the tense for the word “cleanses” denotes a present continuous action. This means that once you are a believer, the blood of Jesus Christ keeps on cleansing you from every sin!
You are not clean until you sin you are clean because sin cannot wear out the blood. The blood of Jesus is not ordinary, it is the blood and life of divinity himself. It is impossible for sin to contaminate that blood. That blood contains righteousness which it impacts and is contagious.
So you can rest and rejoice knowing that you are always forgiven in this continuous “wash cycle” of Jesus’ blood. Because you are continually cleansed, you are always in the light. Even in your failures you are still in the light because the blood is continuously washing you!
Scriptures say in Hebrews 9:14 says,
“…how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”
Don’t let guilt and condemnation ride your consciousness because of sin. The consciousness of sin only breeds more sin. The blood which has been shed once is continuously cleansing you. So in the eyes of the father he sees you pure and spotless because of the blood.
When your conscience is pure and unstained from guilt and condemnation through the realization of the constant cleansing of the blood, you will realize that you will produce living works which are the offsprings of righteousness.
Your redemption was procured by the blood of Jesus and this secures you with the righteousness of God. This righteousness grants boldness which is your key to accessing the victorious life in Christ. Don’t let anyone cheat you of your inheritance which is due to the blood that keeps speaking for you.
If you have sinned, remind yourself that Jesus’ blood keeps on cleansing you from every sin every hour of the day, all week and all year round—and move on with God! The devil cannot defeat you when your faith is in the blood that cleanses you continuously. That faith-focus gives you victory to reign over addictions and your shortcomings in life. The cleansing blood is your confidence that faith lives on.
Remember that your redemption is not temporal as that of the old covenant with the blood of bulls and goat. Your redemption is through the eternal blood of Jesus Christ which has secured for you eternal redemption and everlasting an righteousness.
“and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” (Hebrews 9:12)
